Calling new international students

Are you an international or EU student coming to study in Nottingham? Would you like to make friends with a current University of Nottingham student mentor? Global Buddies is for you!

What is Global Buddies?

‘Buddy’ is another word for friend, and that’s exactly what Global Buddies is about – making friends. It’s also about helping international and EU students like you find the support you need.

When you arrive on campus for the first time, you’ll be partnered with a mentor – a current student who will show you everything Nottingham has to offer. They’ll contact you before you land in the UK, and will be here to answer your questions before you arrive and when you get here. They’ll help you settle in and offer support, or show you where to find the help you need. You’ll also have the opportunity to get involved with our Monthly Meetups, meet students from the UK and around the world, and be a part of the SU community.

Applications open again in September

Even if you are not part of Global Buddies, you can come to our Monthly Meetups! Check out our Facebook group to get all the latest updates and find out what’s going on. You can also follow us on Instagram @globalbuddiesuon

Volunteer with us

If you’re a friendly, reliable and enthusiastic UoN student who wants to help new international, Erasmus and exchange students make friends and settle into life here at Nottingham, become a Global Buddy!

You’ll support a small number of international students, for up to four hours a week, helping them settle in, make new friends and make the most of their time at University.

You’ll get full training from us, making sure you’re taught everything you need to know about being a Global Buddy. So if you’ve got great social skills and empathy towards any issues that may affect international students, we want to hear from you.

Applications for being a Mentor in 2020 open on 30th March until 15th May and you can view more details here.

Volunteering in Global Buddies was a really fun and fruitful experience. An amazing chance to meet with other people who are willing to help and keen on meeting other people from different cultures. It is also a chance to do something helpful and enjoy the happiness of giving. GB volunteer, January 2018
