About Wheelchair Basketball
Welcome!
We are the University of Nottingham Wheelchair Basketball Club! We are a mixed ability, mixed gender sports club. We pride ourselves in harbouring a sporting environment where everyone is on a level playing field - we like to call it "reverse inclusion".
What is reverse inclusion?
Many people with physical disabilities are restricted from participating in typical team sports. With reverse inclusion, inclusion is created by enabling anybody to play our sport together - regardless of whether they have a physical disability or not. In this sense, the wheelchair is a piece of sporting equipment - just like a bicycle, or a rowing boat. Our club is made up of a mix of people, some with physical disabilities and some without.
Can I join?
We encourage absolutely anybody to give our sport a try. Most of us had never played the sport before attending university - or considered joining - but we were soon hooked! We run weekly Engage sessions which are aimed towards beginners, in which we teach basic movement, ball skills, and shooting skills, before ending with a game - a "scrimmage". Our coached training sessions focus on more technique, strength and tactics. Below is our membership structure:
Standard Membership - £30*
- Weekly coached training sessions
- All equipment provided for no extra charge
- Ability to play in friendly fixtures and competitive BUCS fixtures
Beginner Membership - £20*
- Weekly coached training sessions
- All equipment provided for no extra charge
- Ability to play in friendly fixtures only
*A UoN Sports Membership is required in order to purchase any Club Membership.
A Club Membership covers absolutely everything - e.g. equipment maintenance, transport to and from fixtures, player licenses (Standard Membership only), affiliation fees, match officials etc. No other fees are required.
When are sessions?
Our session timetable is as follows.
Engage - DRSV, Hall C - Thursday 17:00-18:30 (TBC) - Free with UoN Sports Membership, otherwise £3
Training - DRSV, Hall C - Saturday 10:00-12:00 - Free with any Club Membership
Training - DRSV, Hall A - Sunday 10:00-12:00 - Free with any Club Membership
Training sessions are due to commence on October 3rd, and Engage sessions are due to commence on October 6th - but these are subject to change due to UoN Sport and BWB guidance.
Please follow our social media and join our Facebook Group for up to date session times, including any cancellations or location changes.

Do I need any equipment?
Nope! The club has a large stock of sports wheelchairs, of various sizes, which are stored in DRSV. We also provide basketballs and bibs/cones at our sessions as required. All you need to do is turn up in sports gear and play!
We have some generic club-owned kit, but we encourage members to buy personalised kit which they will be able to use to represent the university in fixtures, and which is theirs to keep.
Will I be able to play in competitive fixtures?
It is surprising how quickly one can go from a complete beginner to a very competent player. All our members have the opportunity to play in fixtures - whether those are friendly matches or competitive fixtures in BUCS (Standard Membership required). We compete against universities from all over the country as well as local league clubs.
Socials?!?
We regularly run both drinking and non-drinking socials. We have meals out, takeaway/movie nights, minigolf/bowling - as well as receiving a healthy, regular allocation of Crisis/Ocean tickets!
COVID-19
We are constantly monitoring advice from our NGB and the government. British Wheelchair Basketball (BGB) have issued “Return To Play” guidance which you can find here:
https://britishwheelchairbasketball.co.uk/mdocs-posts/return-to-play-matrix/
We are working hard to ensure we can run fun, engaging sessions which adhere to these guidelines.
For any questions, please contact Harry North at pmyhmn@nottingham.ac.uk.
Committee
All of our clubs and societies are run by a committee.
A committee is a team of people that lead, organise and publicise a group within your Students’ Union.
It can be really rewarding as well as being a great way to gain experience and invaluable skills for your future career.
