About STAR (Student Action for Refugees)
Welcome to Student Action for Refugees!
We represent UoN's STAR society, joining a national network of student-ran societies that work to support refugees and asylum seekers locally, nationally and around the world.
We are resolved to making positive changes in our society to ensure refugees and asylum seekers are treated with the dignity and respect any human deserves. Sadly, there are many barriers to this, including political/legal injustices, media portrayal and financial deficiencies.
However, STAR has shown that students can help a huge ammount. At UoN, one of the main things you can do is volunteer at our weekly English classes (Thurday evenings, via Zoom). Here, you will have a relaxed conversation with one of our learners (usually an adult refugee/asylum seeker from the local area). This gives them a great opportunity to learn new vocabulary and also build friendships. Don't worry about your background or experience - we welcome complete beginners to teaching and will of course help you at any point needed.
There are also opportunities for campaigning, fundraising and social events throughout the year. If you'd like any more info, please don't hesitate to get in touch! There is no minimum or maximium committment required - just a drive to support the important work of STAR!

All of our clubs and societies are run by a committee.
A committee is a team of people that lead, organise and publicise a group within your Students’ Union.
It can be really rewarding as well as being a great way to gain experience and invaluable skills for your future career.
