About Nottingham Medical Leadership Society
Nottingham Medical Leadership Society
What is the purpose of the society?
Some context: Recent research has linked that better clinical performance with proper clinical leadership especially learning about it at an early stage. In the current NHS, leadership and managerial positions are usually held non – medically qualified individuals hence, their decisions might not always be in the patients best interests. The presidents of the Royal colleges were looking for a solution on how to get doctors more involved in running the health service and they have made the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM) in 2011 which hosts regular events and conferences to encourage students to pursue leadership and management. Also, it is not a separate speciality instead it’s a set of skills everyone should have to ensure better healthcare.
We are a new society, looking to just that for medical students at Nottingham through engaging events.
What events do you normally organise?
Initially, we are thinking of organising talks with experts in the field from talks ranging from how to run a medical school to utilising social media platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn properly to mentorship and about Quality Improvement projects. I am pleased to inform you that our first talk will be given by none other than the Dean of the Medical School Prof Brigitte Scammell in October so keep your eyes peeled for that In the long run, we are thinking of organising a conference in Nottingham and invite students from other medical schools so that a lot more people can know about Medical Leadership and Management!
Any plans for events during COVID?
We will be going ahead with the talks that we have planned but they will be on online platforms such as Facebook Live or Microsoft teams We are also working with Dharma Medical Association (DMA) to make a Fresher’s booklet to help new first-years to ace Medical School despite the initial setback of COVID!

While setting up the society, all of the committee members are well aware of how important social media and publicity is as it can either make or break events and frankly a society itself. That is why we have accounts on every major social media platform: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn! All of our clubs and societies are run by a committee.
A committee is a team of people that lead, organise and publicise a group within your Students’ Union.
It can be really rewarding as well as being a great way to gain experience and invaluable skills for your future career.
