Welcome to UoN's English Society!
We are the student run group primarily representing students from the School of English (and associated joint honours degrees), but are open to any student joining no matter degree, as long as they show enthusiasm for what we do.
On which note - what do we do?
Despite COVID, we seek to run a number of socials to try and get you students socialising and meeting each other (legally, of course). This is going to take some creativity on our part, and indeed many online aspects too, but we're going to do our best to make your uni experience as enjoyable as possible.
Aside from that, we intend to run an Arts Ball post-Christmas, and a trip to Barcelona some time in March. Equality, diversity and inclusivity is something we value immensely. Thus, we will be trying to provide the opportunity for students to visit schools to talk about their experiences studying English as BAME students, or about how BAME topics are handled in English. We also are going to be supporting our EDI Student Reps, as we try to support students who want to make change for the better. We are open to any and all ideas about how we can help celebrate the diversity of our course.
We are also in the process of setting up a podcast. The finer details aren't confirmed yet, but our podcast ideas are numerous. We want to interview lecturers, external speakers, students themselves, have student debates, book reviews, pop culture discussions - in essence, anything that you students can come up with. Get involved in a presenting, participating, recording, producing, directing or editing aspect - even if you don't want to be on camera/speak, there are plenty of other things you can help with!
This is also the place to be if you want to represent English at a sporting level. IMS looks to be going ahead, and so we will need some new recruits for our football and netball teams. It's an excellent way to meet likeminded people on your degree, and you'll form a really strong bond with the fellow members of your team.
If any of this is of interest you, we would be so incredibly grateful if you could purchase a membership for just £5. If not that, then you could at least follow our Facebook and Instagram pages, where you can stay up-to-date with what we're doing and indeed that may well persuade you to buy a membership!
If you have any questions, feel free to contact any of us on committee. However, the main point of contact is our President, Joe, who you can email at firstname.lastname@example.org, or contact on social media.
Engsoc love xx
All of our clubs and societies are run by a committee.
A committee is a team of people that lead, organise and publicise a group within your Students’ Union.
It can be really rewarding as well as being a great way to gain experience and invaluable skills for your future career.
