About Cheerleading
The University of Nottingham Cheerleading Squad is a group of outstanding student athletes who enthusiastically represent the university. Our routines include stunts, dance, and gymnastics to achieve competitive and crowd pleasing routines.
Anyone and everyone is welcome to come and join, whether you have experience or not, it's a great way to keep fit, meet new people and have loads of fun at the same time!
Tryouts
The Squad holds open tryouts at the start of each academic year which are open to all students and associates of the University. These cover a range of skills, from dance, jumping, stunting and tumbling. We encourage everyone to come and tryout, no matter your gender or experience!
Tryouts for the 2020/21 academic year have already passed and we unfortunately do not hold tryouts again until the next acadmic year.
All stages of try-outs are compulsory to continue. Tryouts cost £5 per try-out, which you must purchase before you arrive, and we recommend that you arrive early. Please wear any comfortable clothing that you can dance in.
Membership
Membership fees for the club for the 20/21 academic year are as follows:
£65 for the Performance Squad, £90 for the Varsity Squad and £100 for Competition Squad. Note if you are in the Comp Squad this is the only membership you need to purchase. This includes hall hire, uniform hire, bows, membership tops, etc.
The UoN sports and fitness membership is also required to be part of any sports club at the University, including ours. Early Bird membership is available until the 2nd October and for £209.
Performance Squad
Performance squad is made of 30 girls who perform an amazing routine at the Futsal and Lacrosse varsity games. Their routine consists of dance and stunts, and they put on a great show! You can watch their 2019 performances on our Youtube channel, linked on this page!
Varsity Squad
Our Varsity Sqaud is made up of 50 members and every year our varsity squad performs new and innovative routines at Basketball, Football, Ice Hockey, American Football, Rugby Union and Rugby League varsity games. You can watch all of our 2019 Varsity performances on our Youtube channel.
Competition Squad
Every member also has the opportunity to try out for the competition squad, made up of 30 girls who participate in regional and national competitions at the complex senior level 3. At the ICC British Open in 2015 we came in 2nd place, and in 2016 we came 1st and division champs at ICC Eastern.
In 2019 we placed 1st for University All Girl Level 3 at ICC British Open, and with the highest score in the entire competition we won National and Grand Champions.
Most recently in 2020, we came first in our division at the BCA University Nationals. Check out our YouTube channel to see our winning performances!
Practice
Our Performance Squad trains once a week on Tuesday evenings 9-10:30pm. Our Varsity Squad trains twice a week on Tuesday evenings 8-9:30pm and Thursday evenings 7-9pm, additional practice (Sunday evenings 8-10:30pm and alternate Wednesday afternoons) are required for our optional Competition Squad. A standard practice session covers a wide range of skills starting with a warm-up, and can include dance sessions, stunting, jump sessions, conditioning and finishes with cool-down.
Socials
As a squad, our social life is second to none. We have regular socials every alternate Wednesday evening, these begin at our sponsor bar and then you can optionally progress onto Crisis at Rock City. These are a lot of fun; a fantastic opportunity to make new friends and for the squad to bond and develop as a team, plus fancy dress is usually on the cards! We also have an annual Christmas meal, where we host a raffle for charity, and as a member of the squad, you also get the opportunity to go on tour during the Easter break!
Charity
As well as socialising our squad is involved with various charity work. We support a local charity, Operation Orphan, and hold various charity fundraisers throughout the year, such as our Christmas wrap and our Easter bag-pack. We managed to raise an impressive £515 for Operation Orphan through lockdown in 2020, as since our tour to Prague was cancelled, we chose to collectively walk/run/cycle the distance to Prague and back!

Committee
All of our clubs and societies are run by a committee.
A committee is a team of people that lead, organise and publicise a group within your Students’ Union.
It can be really rewarding as well as being a great way to gain experience and invaluable skills for your future career.
